Ping Event Monitor Reference Guide

notitie

Overview

The Ping Event Monitor utilizes standard ICMP pings to check the availability of servers. It sends multiple pings to selected devices and alerts you if they are unreachable or if the maximum or average response times exceed set thresholds. Additionally, it provides graphs to display average and maximum response times, helping to identify both long-term trends and short-term fluctuations.

Use Cases

  • Gaining an understanding of your average ping responses.
  • Receiving alerts about systems that are not responding.
  • Measuring the amount of jitter across selected network connections.

Monitoring Options

Ping Settings

  • Ping Count: Choose how many pings the event monitor should send during each run.
  • Ping Time Out: Set how long the event monitor will wait for a response to each ping.
  • TTL (Time To Live): Select the TTL parameter for the ping requests. The default value generally suffices for most purposes.

Alerts

  • Alert if more than a specified number of pings fail: Receive alerts when a significant number of pings fail.
  • Alert if average response time is greater than a specified value: Get alerted when the average response time exceeds your threshold.
  • Alert if maximum response time is greater than a specified value: Alerts are triggered based on the maximum response time observed.

Additional Options

  • Include a traceroute in all failure notifications: When enabled, the event monitor will perform a traceroute to the monitored device whenever a ping fails. This can be useful for diagnosing network issues.

Authentication and Security

  • This event monitor does not require specific authentication or security rights.

Protocols
