File Bandwidth Event Monitor Reference Guide

notitie

Overview

The File Bandwidth Event Monitor measures network bandwidth by retrieving a file from another network device and timing the transfer. This monitor is ideal for assessing network file transfer performance. It is recommended to use a file that is at least 5 megabytes in size and preferably a compressed file to prevent false readings from network compression techniques.

info

Use Cases

  • Testing network file transfer performance.

Monitoring Options

File Setup

  • File: Enter one or more UNC paths to the files that will be used for the bandwidth test. Use placeholders like [devicename] to dynamically substitute device names during runtime. Example: \\[devicename]\c$\folder\file.txt.

Alerts

  • Alert with [Info/Warning/Error/Critical] if the device cannot be contacted: Get notified if the event monitor is unable to connect to a network device.
  • Alert if the minimum bandwidth per file is less than a specified value: Set minimum bandwidth thresholds and receive alerts if these are not met.
  • Alert if the average bandwidth is less than a specified value: Set alerts based on the average bandwidth achieved across multiple tests.

Test Configuration

  • Number of times to download the file: Specify how many times the event monitor should download each file to calculate average bandwidth rates effectively.

Authentication and Security

  • The account used must have permissions to access the file and all its contents over the network.

Protocols

Data Points

  • This event monitor generates the following data points:

Average RateThe average bandwidth rate.
